Smoothies for weight loss have become something of a wellness trend in recent years, along with other health foods such as pu erh tea, green coffee extract, chia seeds, and supplements like maca powder and spirulina – food items that were relatively unknown to most, but now line the shelves of health food stores and even supermarkets. There are various incarnations of this healthy drink: green smoothies, breakfast smoothies, and fruit smoothies are but a few of them.

Why Are Smoothies Good For You?

Depending on what ingredients you use, smoothies can be detoxifying, energy-boosting, slimming, or a combination of these and many other beneficial effects. The fruits and/or vegetables in it are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy fats and micronutrients. These fight the signs of stress and of aging, give you glowing skin, help your organs function better, and can even positively affect your mood and performance during the day.

How Can Smoothies Help You Lose Weight?

Smoothies are ideal as meal replacements. They give you the same satisfaction you get after indulging in your favorite meal or snack, but contain significantly fewer calories. My favorite peanut butter and banana smoothie has a fraction of the calories of a peanut butter and banana sandwich, but satisfies my sweet tooth nonetheless. It is also a good source of protein (from the peanut butter) and potassium (from the banana). I add a scoop of chocolate whey protein powder to the smoothie and it becomes even healthier. If you replace breakfast and another meal with a weight-loss smoothie, you can reduce your daily caloric intake to half or even less.

Additionally, healthy smoothies for weight loss that are made with fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with monounsaturated fatty acids, which are known to help fight belly fat. And making them thicker, as with “green thickies” and breakfast smoothies for weight loss, leaves you feeling fuller than drinking thinner smoothies that have the same caloric content.

Guidelines For Making Weight-Loss Smoothies

Fruit smoothies for weight loss should be made using fresh produce. Processed and pre-packaged fruits have, more often than not, already lost most of their nutrient content. When making smoothies, use organic and/or locally-available fruits and greens, and clean them thoroughly to avoid ingesting any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers they may have come in contact with.

Green smoothies for weight loss are best when they don’t contain too many ingredients. Keep them simple. 1 kind of fruit, 1 kind of leafy green, and water is the ideal combination.

Smoothies are best consumed immediately, however if you have leftovers, you can put them in the fridge and enjoy them later in the day. In my household, leftovers are poured into popsicle molds and eaten as green pops. My kids love them.

Getting Started

This is a simple recipe for a healthy and satisfying smoothie:

1 frozen mango, sliced

1 frozen banana, sliced

a handful of spinach

almond milk

Puree the banana and the frozen mango. Add the spinach and puree. If the mixture is too thick, add a splash of almond milk. Serve immediately.
